The Bavarian State Library (BSB) has redefined efficiency and collaboration through Alma’s Library Open Workflows (LibOW). After moving its operations to the cloud with Alma, BSB sought to empower staff across departments while reducing IT overhead.

With LibOW, BSB introduced a flexible, cloud-based environment where both technical and non-technical staff can design and run workflows independently — freeing IT to focus on strategic initiatives.

“Both coders and non-coders can now work efficiently while IT resources are freed for more complex challenges.”
Dr. Mathias Kratzer, Chief Information Officer

From automating purchase order processes to customizing record updates, BSB staff quickly realized measurable time savings and smoother collaboration. As one of the first Development Partners, BSB worked closely with Ex Libris to shape the evolution of LibOW, contributing ideas that benefit the wider Alma community.

“For us at BSB, the flexibility struck me immediately — it added a level of customization and efficiency that supported our day-to-day work.”
— Peter Heller, System Librarian

At BSB, Library Open Workflows is more than a technical solution — it’s a cultural shift, fostering creativity, cross-department collaboration, and a new sense of ownership across the organization.
