Founded in 2016 as a not-for-profit corporation, the Digital Theological Library (DTL) has always been dedicated to providing top-tier digital library support for educational institutions specializing in religious studies. As their network of partner institutions grew, DTL recognized the need for a more flexible and scalable library services platform – leading them to a strategic decision to migrate to Ex Libris Alma and Primo.

A Platform Built for Collaboration

Given DTL’s unique multi-institutional structure, Alma and Primo stood out as ideal solutions. Their flexibility and customization capabilities were key factors in the decision. “We were really intrigued by the customization possibilities with Alma and Primo,” shared Managing Director and COO Drew Baker. “The ability in Primo to define custom views, specific links, and branding for our various member institutions was very appealing.”

On the operations side, Alma provides a centralized hub where DTL can function as system librarians for all its partner institutions—streamlining workflows and making resource management more efficient.

A Promising Start

Though they are still in the early stages of the migration, DTL has already found the process to be insightful and well-structured. Regular meetings with the migration team have helped them anticipate challenges and fine-tune their approach.

Drew expressed his enthusiasm about the transition: “We’re really excited, and as time has gone on, we’ve only gotten more excited about the capabilities of Alma and Primo for our needs.”

With the foundation now set, DTL is well on its way to unlocking the full potential of Alma and Primo—ensuring seamless access to theological resources for institutions worldwide.
