Newton, MA—August 31, 2006. The Ex Libris™ Group today announced a number of recent North American sales of DigiTool®, Ex Libris digital asset management system. Amherst College, the Florida Center for Library Automation (FCLA), the University of South Florida, and The Library of Virginia (LVA) have all selected DigiTool to provide their next generation digital asset management system. Together the institutions have a variety of different plans and expectations for their DigiTool implementations.The Library of Virginia, which serves as the library agency of the state, the archival agency of the Commonwealth, and the reference library at the seat of government, will use DigiTool in the Institutional Repository mode. LVA will work collaboratively with the Commonwealths agencies and departments to enable them to distributively deposit their electronic documents of all types and formats into DigiTools central repository.
The University of South Florida joins its sister institution, Florida State University, which has been a DigiTool user since 2004, as individual DigiTool proprietors. Both are members of the State University System of Florida, which in turn has also selected DigiTool through FCLA. FCLA is a central service provider that assists the libraries of Floridas publicly funded universities in meeting their teaching and research objectives for students and faculty. FCLA plans to move its existing Publication of Archival, Library & Museum Materials (PALMM) collections from their existing DLXS (Digital Library Extension Service) system to DigiTool.
PALMM is a cooperative initiative of the public universities of Florida to provide digital access to important source materials for research and scholarship. PALMM projects may involve a single university or may be collaborative efforts between a university and partners within or outside of the state university system. Amherst College, founded in 1821 as a nonsectarian institution for “the education of indigent young men of piety and talents” and one of the premier liberal arts colleges in North America, chose DigiTool to replace a number of separate, standalone, non-interoperable digital asset management systems on campus. Amherst College will begin its DigiTool implementation following its ALEPH® 500 implementation (August 28, 2006).
