Primo will provide Royal Library users with inspiring discovery and intelligent presentation of qualified resources
Ex Libris Group and Fujitsu Services, the exclusive distributor of Ex Libris products in Denmark and Sweden, are pleased to announce that the Royal Library of Denmark, which serves as the country’s national library and the library of Copenhagen University, has chosen the Primo® discovery and delivery solution to provide the institutions’ users with a state-of the-art interface for all local and remote scholarly information resources. Primo is designed to enable libraries to offer users an experience and services in line with their expectations to receive relevant information quickly and efficiently wherever and whenever they need it. The Royal Library of Denmark is one of 28 national libraries that are running Ex Libris products.
“Our students, professors, and other users have expressed their need for a more creative interface to our resources,” explained Erland Kolding Nielsen, director general of the Royal Library. “Early on, we realized that Primo could be the answer to this need. The challenge was to establish a Danish consortium consisting of other innovative research libraries with the same need for Primo, to enter into a development partnership with Ex Libris.
“As a research library, we must provide a unique experience that will encourage discovery while providing an intelligent presentation of qualified resources. The Primo system enables users to search all of our information sources via one interface. In addition to our library collections–held in nine different databases–a search can include valuable results from databases such as the Archive for Danish Literature and the Portrait Collection, which contains short biographies and portraits of famous people, primarily Danes. We believe that Primo will shed light on some underexposed collections by drawing the attention of our users to resources that they did not know existed.”
“The fact that Primo address elements from Web 2.0,” added Kolding Nielsen, “enables the library to provide functionality and features that users are familiar with from some popular Web-based services.”
The Danish Primo consortium, led by the Royal Library of Denmark, is a Primo development partner–a leading group of organizations that were chosen to collaborate with Ex Libris on the development of the Primo system. Steen Pedersen, of Fujitsu Services, commented: “The Danish consortium, headed by the Royal Library of Denmark, has made a significant strategic decision in choosing Primo as its future discovery and delivery solution. This decision confirms the direction that Ex Libris has taken in developing the Primo system. The consortium consists of a number of innovative research libraries, including the Technical Knowledge Centre of Denmark, Aalborg University Library, and the Danish Administrative Library. As the distributor of Ex Libris products in Denmark and Sweden, we are very proud of the commitment that the Royal Library of Denmark has taken by stepping into the future with Primo.”
About the Royal Library of Denmark:
The Royal Library of Denmark was established around 1648 when Frederik III appointed the library’s first librarian. During Frederik’s reign, four prominent Danish libraries were acquired. These libraries, along with the king’s own library, became the core of the Royal Library.
The Royal Library serves as the national library of Denmark and the library of the University of Copenhagen and serves as the national deposit for all works published in Denmark or outside of Denmark on the subjects of Denmark or Danes. The Royal Library contains the Danish Museum of Books and Printing, the National Museum of Photography, and the National Archive, which houses Danish manuscripts and collections of cultural and historical significance.
