Customizable, richer discovery experience designed in collaboration with the library community, features modern, user-friendly interface

Ex Libris, part of Clarivate, has today announced the Primo Next Discovery Experience User Interface. Designed in close collaboration with the library community through a dedicated UX focus group and 12 design partners, early access was offered to 100 users to provide feedback. The new user interface is intuitive and streamlined, offering a richer, easy-to-use discovery experience that is tailored to the needs of academic libraries and their users.

The new user interface is a key element of the Next Discovery Experience (NDE), which places users at its core, enhances research efficiency and transforms the way academic research is done. Designed to highlight library collections, the Next Discovery Experience ensures a seamless transition from resource management to discovery.

Manuela Schwendener, Systems Librarian, Basel University Library and member of the NDE UX focus group said: “I commend Ex Libris on involving the focus group so early and really acting on our feedback; the most important change in my opinion will be more customization options both for the libraries and the patrons.”

Yaniv Levi Koram, Vice President of Academic Discovery and Digital Collection at Ex Libris, part of Clarivate said: “The new user interface balances usability, flexibility and innovation. By grounding our design decisions for the Primo Next Discovery Experience with user insights obtained through a continuous feedback loop, we gathered real-time feedback on the usability of new features and made informed improvements along the way.

“At Clarivate, we are committed to partnering with our community and delivering solutions that empower academic libraries to deliver better experiences for students and faculty.”

The new features include:

  • Simplified workflows – reduces the number of steps required to find and access relevant information, such as book reviews, where users stay within the record
  • One-page overview of library activity – gives users a single view of their library activity including loans, requests and search history
  • Advanced search functionality – easy to use, slide-out menu provides quick access to fields and filter options
  • Collection discovery – added facets, list view, pagination and improved search experience to the collection pages
  • Branding and customization – institutions can easily customize the design of and build custom components for their Discovery homepage
  • Utilize Primo Research Assistant – unlocks new ways of searching with trusted, academic AI-powered assistance

Later in 2025, new features including natural language search, citations trail, resource recommendations and ProQuest Document Insights are planned to be added to the interface.
