Network of four hundred public libraries to automate services with the ALEPH 500 integrated library system
Santiago, Chile—January 16, 2007 Grupo Sistemas Logicos S.A., the exclusive distributor of Ex Libris™ products in Latin America, is pleased to announce that the Department of Public Libraries in coordination with the Office of Libraries, Archives, and Museums of Chile (DIBAM), has selected ALEPH 500® for its nationwide public library system. The network of 378 public libraries throughout Chile is managed by DIBAM which hosts BiblioRedes, an innovative program providing free access to computers, the Internet, and technological training.
DIBAM has assigned the highest priority to the expansion and development of Chilean public libraries, notes Ricardo Lopez, Assistant Director of the Department of Public Libraries. The implementation of ALEPH 500 for the management and provision of services at all public libraries will help create a nationwide bibliographic network. We see the public library as the means best suited to meet the needs of our communities in respect to books and culture. We place special emphasis on the most needy and geographically isolated sectors, in that way providing equal opportunity for all peoples of Chile.
The social implications associated with the project to modernize the public libraries make it a high priority on the Chilean national agenda. We are proud to be offering ALEPH 500, advising DIBAM on this project, and providing the technical support necessary to implement this undertaking—the first of its kind in Latin America, commented Alfredo Bronsoiler, General Manager of Grupos Sistemas Logicos. The National Library of Chile has successfully worked with ALEPH 500 since its migration from a NOTIS system in 2000.
