The National Library of Spain (BNE) is now using the unified, cloud-based Alma digital resource management and Primo discovery platform from Ex Libris™, part of Clarivate™. Both solutions were launched as a transformative technology upgrade to improve staff efficiency and enhance the user experience.

 

The Library’s replacement of legacy systems delivers positive, impactful updates to online resource experiences for library users and library resource management processes – notably lending, cataloging, acquisitions, and serial publications management, among others. The Library has previously managed various processes of library system migration, from Sabini and Ariadna in the late 1980s, to Unicorn in 2007, and later Symphony in 2017, which is now being replaced by Alma and Primo library discovery service.

BNE expects the cloud services model to be advantageous for infrastructure management and maintenance. In the library management realm, the new system will include features that will enable the BNE to incorporate new procedures in the automated management of its collections, such as Legal Deposit, and better integration in the handling of physical and electronic publications.

 

In addition, the renewal of services for users, who now have access to a personal area for managing consultation requests, saving records and searches, and exporting data in a wide range of citation formats compatible with bibliographic management systems. Additionally, the search interface features useful tools such as faceted, voice, and artificial intelligence (AI) search capabilities. The new system is modern in its graphic and functional design, while being mobile-ready, allowing for better presentation and grouping of bibliographic information.
