The cloud deployment and integrated framework of Alma and Primo led BiG to choose Ex Libris for resource management and discovery
Hamburg, Germany—January 28, 2013. Ex Libris® Group, a world leader in the provision of library automation solutions, is pleased to announce that the Bibliothek am Guisanplatz (BiG) has adopted the Primo® discovery and delivery solution and the next-generation Alma resource management service. One of Switzerland’s oldest research libraries, Bibliothek am Guisanplatz—the leading library of the Alexandria Library Network—required an integrated framework to transform the management of its vast collections and to expose and deliver those collections to federal employees, military personnel, scholars, and the public. Alma is replacing the library’s VTLS system.
Daniel Kohler, head of coordination at the Alexandria Library Network, commented: ”The library was keen to choose a single, unified solution that would enable us to manage our metadata, electronic resources, and digital collections. The cloud-based, software-as-a-service (SaaS) deployment of Alma is extremely attractive for the Bibliothek am Guisanplatz, as we prefer to direct our resources to serving and supporting users rather than handling technical maintenance. Based on clearly defined workflows, Alma will enable us to improve efficiency and simplify processes across our many collections and departments. In parallel, Primo will provide a comprehensive, customizable, and easy-to-use discovery interface for our diverse user community, which includes federal employees, professionals from the military and political communities, scholars, and the general public.”
”We are delighted to welcome the Bibliothek am Guisanplatz as the first Alma customer in Switzerland,” noted Ullrich J?ngling, vice president of sales for Central and East Europe at Ex Libris. ”Joining the rapidly growing worldwide Alma community, the library is taking a leading role as a driver of innovation among Swiss libraries. We are convinced that this strategic project will serve as an excellent case study for future implementations of Alma in Switzerland.”
About the Bibliothek am Guisanplatz

Since January 1, 2009, the library has been coordinating and managing the libraries of the Federal Administration, maintaining close cooperation in IT and documentation, leading the Federal Documentation Committee, and administering the Alexandria library network. In a rapidly changing environment, the library, which is open to the public, ensures the provision of international technical literature in fields such as history, politics, the armed forces, civil protection, traffic, energy, migration, architecture, environment, agriculture, finances, and economics.
