The Harold B. Lee Library chose Rosetta after an international-scale evaluation of digital preservation systems
Chicago, IL—February 14, 2012. Ex Libris® Group, a world leader in the provision of library automation solutions, is pleased to announce that Brigham Young University (BYU) has selected the Ex Libris Rosetta digital preservation system. The first member of the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) to adopt Rosetta, Brigham Young will implement Rosetta initially for the Harold B. Lee Library’s digital collections and will later expand the implementation to the digital assets of the university’s colleges and schools.
Installed in libraries and archives worldwide, Rosetta encompasses the entire digital preservation workflow, including the acquisition, validation, ingest, storage, preservation, and delivery of digital objects. Rosetta enables academic institutions as well as libraries, archives, and other memory institutions to manage, preserve, and provide access to institutional documents, research output in digital formats, digital images, Web sites, and other digitally born and digitized materials.
”We face a huge threat of losing access to our important electronic files over time,” commented Julene Butler, university librarian at the Harold B. Lee Library. ”With technology—both hardware and software—continually changing, we need a reliable solution to store and retrieve that data for the long term. Building on our core skills of access and preservation, Rosetta will enable the library to take care of the full range of digital preservation needs for BYU.”
Having embarked on a thorough evaluation of digital preservation systems in 2002, BYU became more interested in the Ex Libris system in light of the National Science Foundation’s requirement that all grant proposals contain a data-management and preservation plan—a requirement that Rosetta would help the university to comply with. The adoption of Rosetta marks the latest phase of the university’s 10-year digital preservation initiative. ”Rosetta will meet our need for digital preservation, finally,” remarked Bill Lund, assistant university librarian for information technology.
”We are very happy to welcome BYU to the growing Rosetta customer community,” noted Mark Triest, president of Ex Libris North America. ”The academic excellence and leadership of this institution make it a perfect candidate to champion the importance of digital preservation to the scholarly community.”
