Initiative will increase student, academic and library staff satisfaction by improving collaboration, access to resources and reducing workflow complexity.

Library staff at Abertay had been using multiple systems, including spreadsheets, to manage resources. This was leading to duplicated effort and issues with data coverage. In addition, e-book subscription titles were not catalogued and were therefore not discoverable via OPAC. The library team wanted to have everything discoverable with one tool to help students to find everything that was available, and thereby increase satisfaction with their service.
Jim Huntingford, head of library services at Abertay University, explained: ”The university has a strategy to continue to invest in IT infrastructure to provide modern and leading edge systems that support our new ways of working and ensure high quality facilities for staff and students. Our library strategy calls on us to enable flexible and seamless access to services, resources and learning opportunities, at any time in any location and through any device. This means we have to deliver integrated data and systems that improve processes relevant to the student and staff journey.”
Mr. Huntingford continued: ”to help us to meet these goals we wanted also to make resources more available and discoverable, to increase their use, and to facilitate collaboration between library staff and teaching colleagues. In particular we want to move away from reliance on Word and PowerPoint as a means of communicating reading lists to students and embrace a solution that will provide active links to the resources listed. Library staff meanwhile will no longer have to struggle with unwieldy spreadsheets in an attempt to ensure all reading list materials are available to students, in appropriate quantities and formats, and in the latest edition.”
”Our arrangement with Edinburgh University to host our library management system was coming to an end, and that provided us with the perfect opportunity to review our requirements,” he said. ”We wanted to continue with a cloud-based software-as-a-service approach as we didn’t want to incur overheads associated with management of local hardware and clients. We also wanted to improve the student experience and make it far easier for them to find and retrieve the materials they had been asked to read.”
”As part of the Scottish Confederation of University and Research Libraries (SCURL) Advanced Procurement for Universities and Colleges initiative, we co-selected Alma and Primo as the best management, delivery and discovery solution for our current and future needs. We selected Leganto separately because we wanted to exploit its integration with them to help us develop our reading list service.”
