Primo will power access to a shared catalogue being developed by the Swiss Canton of Ticino
Hamburg, Germany —July 2, 2015. Ex Libris® Group, a leading global provider of SaaS solutions for libraries and higher education, is pleased to announce that the Sistema per la valorizzazione del patrimonio culturale (service for the promotion of cultural heritage, or SVPC) in Switzerland has chosen the Primo® discovery and delivery solution for a portal that will provide access to all of the Canton of Ticino’s extensive cultural and scientific resources. Shared by 80 libraries, the first stage of the Primo-powered catalog will enable users to discover and access more than a million scientific and cultural heritage items. The portal project, named Sàmara, is supported by the Ticino’s Department of Education, Culture, and Sports (Dipartimento dell’educazione, della cultura e dello sport).
”Our selection of Primo was driven by our need to address the challenges that our users face while performing research,” said Paola Costantini, scientific consultant at the SVPC. ”Primo will enable us to provide a single entry point to heterogeneous metadata and to develop a new approach to the management of digital assets, an approach based on collaborative tools, standards, and techniques. The scalability of Primo will be especially important as the project grows, eventually incorporating access to resources held by museums, archives, and other documentation centers. With the new portal in place, we will be able to manage the digital records of the region’s scientific and cultural heritage and offer this valuable collection to over 35,000 active users.”
”We are very pleased to welcome SVPC to the Primo community,” remarked Liliana Morotti, general manager of Ex Libris Italy. ”The flexibility of Primo and the various options for harvesting, normalizing, indexing, and displaying local materials make Primo the perfect tool for supporting this important project. We look forward to seeing the new catalog become a major research tool for the SVPC community.”
