Fujitsu Denmark, the exclusive distributor of Ex Libris™ products in Denmark, Sweden, and their provinces, announced today that the National Library of the Faroe Islands and a number of public and school libraries throughout the Faroe Islands have chosen an Ex Libris/Fujitsu library solution. The new services, to be offered to the population of the Islands, include the ALEPH® 500 integrated library system and the SFX® context-sensitive link server. The Faroe Islands have also chosen the Statutory Delivery, Selection List, and Booking add-on modules developed by Fujitsu for special Scandinavian educational needs.
The ALEPH 500 solution, which will replace the existing Mikromarc system, will integrate the majority of library materials into one Faroese bibliographic database and will provide easy access to it.
The national librarian, Martin Naes, states: We have spent quite some time in evaluating our options for choosing a successor to our current system. ALEPH 500 was chosen for many different reasons. We believe that with ALEPH 500 we get the best guarantee for delivery as the system is a world-class solution used worldwide. Also, ALEPH 500 is the dominant system in the Scandinavian national libraries (Denmark, Sweden and Iceland). The total package is able to fulfil all the different needs we have in the Faroe Islands from national library requirements, such as statutory delivery, to public and school library functionalities. Even pupils of the Educational Centre of the Faroe Islands can book their highly different materials. We look forward to begin using the system.
We are very pleased to welcome the National Library of the Faroe Islands to Ex Libris distinguished group of national libraries, says Steen Pedersen, head of the library department at Fujitsu Denmark-Sweden. This solution will improve the cohesion of the library services of the Faroe Islands and put them at the forefront of electronic information services and administration. It will now be possible, in a single search, to see which libraries hold a certain book or other material. The Statutory Delivery module will ensure more efficient handling of the statutory delivery task of the Faroe Islands. SFX will provide the users of the national library with the option of finding appropriate full-text articles and other internet-related information quickly and easily.
About the National Library of the Faroe Islands:
Founded in 1828 as an independent institution which later came under the control of the Faroese Government, the national library’s main functions are to develop a comprehensive collection of all Faroese literature and literature about the Faroe Islands and to serve as the central library for all of the Faroe people and for scholars.
Local printers have a statutory obligation to provide the national library with four copies of all printed materials. The Faroese Department of the Library produces an annual catalog of all published material concerning the Faroe Islands. One copy of every item is kept separately in the Faroese Department and can be read in the reference library. The Faroese Department is divided into sections devoted to manuscripts, pamphlets, newspapers, and periodicals.
There are 15 public libraries and 11 school libraries in the Faroe Islands. The National Library is responsible for purchasing and cataloging books for most of these libraries.
