Yokohama, Japan—September 21, 2021. Ex Libris, a ProQuest company, is pleased to announce that the Ex Libris Alma® library services platform and the Ex Libris Primo® discovery solution have gone live at the National Institute of Informatics (NII), in Japan. The Alma platform will support the NII, which is dedicated to the creation of future value in the new field of informatics.
Prior to adopting the Alma platform, the NII library used two different library systems to manage physical and electronic resources and provided separate access to them. Because the systems were not integrated, researchers had difficulty locating scholarly content. The move to the Alma platform has unified the resources, improved the library’s efficiency, and facilitated researchers’ access to resources.
By combining the management and delivery of physical and electronic resources, we now have a simpler workflow. The feedback from researchers has been positive, citing the ease with which they can search for both electronic resources and physical materials through a single service.
“The NII library is a small library operated mainly by two outsourced staff” explained Deputy Manager of the Scholarly and Academic Information Division (Cyber Science Infrastructure Development Department) Shin Kataoka. “By combining the management and delivery of physical and electronic resources, we now have a simpler workflow. The feedback from researchers has been positive, citing the ease with which they can search for both electronic resources and physical materials through a single service. The electronic resource management service is scheduled to start operating in the spring of 2022. We hope that the data linkage will make the management and provision of electronic resource title lists and terms of use more accurate and convenient.”
Ex Libris President Oded Scharfstein added, “I am delighted that the adoption of the Alma platform and Primo discovery has assisted the NII in replacing a myriad of systems that previously managed the library’s daily routine tasks – electronic resources, link resolver, knowledge base, and resource discovery service. I am certain that this strategic move by the NII will have a powerful impact on the future of academic libraries in Japan.”
About the National Institute of Informatics
As Japan’s only general academic research institution seeking to create future value in the new discipline of informatics, the National Institute of Informatics (NII) seeks to advance integrated research and development activities in information-related fields, including networking, software, and content. These activities range from theoretical and methodological work through applications. As an interuniversity research institute, the NII promotes the creation of a state-of-the-art academic-information infrastructure (the Cyber Science Infrastructure, or CSI), which is essential to research and education within the broader academic community, focusing on partnerships and other joint efforts with universities and research institutions throughout Japan, as well as industries and civilian organizations.
In parallel, the NII develops and operates services for the essential academic information infrastructures used by the entire academic research community in Japan for research and education; it builds and operates the Science Information NETwork (SINET5), on one hand, and provides academic content and service platforms, on the other. The bilateral feedback cycle between the findings gained from the service operations and from the academic research generates cutting-edge technologies, which are utilized in the service.
